For rapper Killer Mike, the ’80s was the most impactful decade of sound. Sitting down with SPIN and Bose as a part of our A long time of Sound collaboration, Killer Mike shares his ideas on the eclectic and rule-breaking period.
“In my view, the ’80s gave you every little thing,” Killer Mike says, “from new wave, heavy hardcore redefined by Metallica, the musings of NWA and 2 Dwell Crew, and, man, the aptitude my mother cherished from George Michael.”

Hip hop was developing as a scene and style throughout the tail finish of the decade, and Killer Mike explains that it was when hip hop “didn’t have guidelines.” If he’d been an artist throughout the ’80s, Killer Mike says being a part of laying down hip hop’s roots would’ve been what he’d cherished most.
